Happy Fitness Friday! Today I want to talk about balance- a skill I believe is HIGHLY underrated in the golf world! Let me start by just naming a few reasons why balance is important:
A balanced set up prepares your body to create a good quality motion
Maintaining balance throughout the swing gives you the best chance for solid contact with the ball
Proper balance in the golf swing enables you to create power and develop speed
Here is a good indicator of whether or not you are swinging in balance: Make a golf swing. Can you hold your finish as if you are posing for the cover of a golf magazine? If so, you are in good balance. If not, keep reading!
Good balance is a result of your body’s proprioception (how our body senses the location of our limbs in space). A common misconception about proprioception is that it cannot be improved. THIS IS FALSE.
One of my favorite things about golf fitness is how I can target my workouts to improve MY game. This is specific to each of us, and why it is so important to be screened by a golf fitness professional to improve your body for your own game. You may also notice you will see changes in your swing technique faster if you add exercises prescribed specifically for you into your workout routine.
Personally, I work on balance a lot in my golf swing both in the gym and on the driving range. I work on feeling a 50-50% weight distribution at address and feeling in an athletic position. If someone were to push me, I would not fall over but remain in perfect balance. I work on feeling balanced at the top of my swing so that I can create power from the ground up on my downswing. And I know that when I hold my finish, I have made a solid swing.
Here are some exercises that will test your balance and improve your proprioception. If your body is able to better sense the location of each limb, you will be able to create a controlled and repeatable motion every time. Please be cautious if you are trying these exercises and always consult your personal physician before starting any new exercise routine!
I hope this has helped you learn a bit about your body and the importance of knowing how it works in your golf swing! Have a happy and balanced Fitness Friday everyone! Keep smiling and enjoy the process as you chase your dreams!
